Left-hander Tarik Skubal took the mound Friday night in Detroit facing the organization that drafted and developed him, surrendering just one run across six innings to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Tigers at Comerica Park. The 29-year-old scattered four hits while striking out seven batters in his first appearance as a visiting player at the ballpark where he spent his entire professional career until a mid-month trade brought him to Los Angeles.

The crowd’s reception mixed cheers and boos for Skubal, reflecting the complex emotions surrounding his departure. Some young fans in attendance wore Tigers jerseys bearing his number and name paired with Dodgers caps, capturing the bittersweet nature of the matchup. After allowing a leadoff double to Gleyber Torres, Skubal retired the next dozen batters consecutively, including striking out the side in the third inning.

Detroit broke through in the fifth when Eduardo Valencia doubled to open the inning and Max Clark followed with a two-out triple, giving the Tigers an early 1-0 lead. The Dodgers responded in the sixth as Miguel Rojas drove in a run with a single off reliever Drew Sommers to tie the game.

Freddie Freeman delivered the decisive blow with a two-out single up the middle in the seventh that scored Teoscar Hernández and provided the eventual margin of victory. Los Angeles’ bullpen proved sufficiently durable, with Evan Phillips, Brock Stewart and Alex Vesia combining for three scoreless innings before Tanner Scott closed out the ninth for his 20th save in 22 opportunities.
