Ryan Gerard carded a 5-under 65 Friday to forge a tie atop the leaderboard with Viktor Hovland at the Tour Championship in Atlanta. The two competitors reached 10-under 130 through 36 holes at East Lake Golf Club, setting the pace heading into the weekend at the PGA Tour’s season-ending event.
Gerard produced five birdie opportunities with relative ease and added a sixth from just inside 80 feet, capitalizing on favorable course conditions marked by rain Thursday and overcast skies Friday. Hovland matched him at the top of the standings after posting a 66, with one of his five birdies coming on the par-3 15th hole.
Scottie Scheffler, ranked world No. 1, sits two strokes back following a 67, while Cameron Young surged up the leaderboard with an impressive 62 to finish just two behind despite opening the round in last place. Young’s round included a 40-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th and a 30 on the front nine, though he remains two shots behind the leaders.
Collin Morikawa and Chris Gotterup each shot 67 to trail by one at 9-under 131. With only Robert MacIntyre failing to break par through two days, the field remains tightly bunched with approximately one-third of competitors separated by just three shots.
Gerard acknowledged the upcoming Presidents Cup captain’s selections weigh on his mind as he pursues both the Tour Championship trophy and the five-year PGA Tour exemption. The 27-year-old from North Carolina emphasized his focus on posting strong scores throughout the week while attempting to secure the victory.
Young, who holds the signature event victory at The Players Championship and earned a major win at Doral, noted the remarkably low scoring environment. He shot 70 in Thursday’s opening round to sit in last place and teed off as a single Friday in the 29-man field after J.J. Spaun withdrew.
Scheffler recovered from two early bogeys by stringing together five birdies across six holes around the turn to remain competitive. His approach shot sailed over the green at 17, but he salvaged a two-putt birdie on 18 to remain within striking distance of the leaders.
