Ratko Mladić, the Bosnian Serb military leader who orchestrated widespread atrocities during the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s, died at a hospital in The Hague, Netherlands, according to U.N. court officials. The 84-year-old general had been in custody since 2011 after evading capture for years on charges related to war crimes committed across the former Yugoslavia.

Mladić, infamously dubbed the “Butcher of Bosnia,” received a life sentence in 2017 after being convicted of orchestrating some of Europe’s most devastating military campaigns since World War II. His command led to the deaths of more than 100,000 people and the displacement of over a million others during the regional conflict. Despite his conviction, Mladić maintained his defiance throughout proceedings, including outbursts directed at judges during his sentencing.

Under Mladić’s leadership, Bosnian Serb forces seized significant territory across Bosnia and Herzegovina, besieged major cities including Sarajevo, and operated detention camps where non-Serb civilians and soldiers faced systematic abuse. His troops were responsible for one of the conflict’s defining atrocities: the 1995 massacre of up to 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica, a town designated as a protected safe zone under Dutch peacekeeping forces.

A former communist-era military officer, Mladić transitioned into the role of Serb military commander as Yugoslavia fragmented during the early 1990s. He initially led Serb forces in Croatia before assuming control of the Bosnian Serb army and orchestrating campaigns marked by mass killings, rape, and torture against non-Serb populations.
