Matt Gogel, a competitor on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, faces a six-month suspension stemming from wagers he placed on PGA Tour events. The golfer acknowledged placing what he characterized as small recreational bets on golf competitions in 2024, claiming he did so without full awareness of the tour’s regulations at the time.
Gogel maintained through an official statement that his wagers were not directed toward events in which he competed, nor toward PGA Tour Champions or regular PGA Tour tournaments. “I would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf. I made an honest mistake, and I look forward to playing in 2027 on the PGA Tour Champions,” he said in the statement released by tour officials.
The suspension takes effect this Sunday and extends through February 22, 2027. While the PGA Tour confirmed that Gogel never wagered on any tournament in which he participated, he violated the organization’s integrity program that broadly prohibits betting on all PGA-sanctioned competitions.
Gogel is not alone in facing penalties for such violations. In 2023, Korn Ferry Tour members Vince India and Jake Staiano received suspensions lasting six months and three months respectively for similarly betting on PGA Tour competitions.
The 55-year-old Gogel won just once during his initial PGA Tour career, capturing the Pebble Beach Pro-Am title in 2002. He later transitioned to broadcasting, working for The Golf Channel and CBS Sports before joining the PGA Tour Champions senior circuit at age 50. He currently ranks 20th in the Charles Schwab Cup points standings.
