Taiwan Man Sentenced to Prison for Using Robot Vacuum to Secretly Record Wife’s Affair

A Taiwan court has handed down a five-month prison sentence to a husband who used a robot vacuum equipped with a camera to secretly record his wife during an extramarital affair, according to reporting from the South China Morning Post. The case highlights tensions between marital rights and individual privacy protections within the judicial system.

The man discovered evidence of his wife’s infidelity after noticing a used toothbrush at their holiday home in late 2023. He subsequently reviewed parking garage surveillance footage and spotted an unfamiliar man who had previously driven his wife home. Months later, he accessed the robot vacuum cleaner through a mobile application and used its audio and video features to document his wife with another man in their residence.

The husband filed a civil lawsuit against his wife and her lover, seeking approximately NT$2 million (US$68,000) in damages for violation of his marital rights. The court initially ruled in his favor, though it awarded substantially less than the amount requested. However, his wife then took legal action against him for recording the private encounter without consent.

The court determined that “marital obligations do not supersede an individual’s right to privacy,” rejecting his attempt to use his earlier civil victory as a legal defense. He received a five-month prison sentence and an additional fine for the unauthorized recording.
