Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand made clear in an interview with Politico that he does not want former President Joe Biden or former Vice President Kamala Harris to campaign on his behalf as he prepares for the 2026 gubernatorial race. When asked directly about Biden’s involvement, Sand dismissed the notion outright, questioning whether such a move was even feasible given current circumstances.
Sand’s response to a similar question about Harris was equally direct, stating “No thanks” before pivoting to emphasize his desire for generational change within Democratic leadership. He further signaled opposition to Harris mounting another presidential run in 2028, telling Politico simply “Nope” when asked about her potential candidacy.
Harris has previously indicated she is considering a 2028 presidential campaign, telling Rev. Al Sharpton in April that she was “thinking about it” and might indeed run. Biden withdrew from the 2024 race following widespread criticism of his debate performance and subsequently backed Harris, who ultimately lost the general election to Donald Trump.
Sand is challenging Republican Zach Lahn, who has secured Trump’s endorsement for the Iowa governorship. Trump announced his backing last month on Truth Social, calling Lahn an “America First Patriot.” Current Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds announced last year that she would not seek another term.
