U.S. Southern Command confirmed an airstrike against a suspected narcotics vessel in the Caribbean on August 25 that resulted in four deaths. The operation, directed by General Donovan and executed by Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere, targeted a speedboat traversing known drug-trafficking corridors with confirmed intelligence linking it to cartel activity.
The strike marks the continuation of an aggressive campaign initiated under the Trump administration in September targeting vessels accused of transporting illegal drugs across the Atlantic and Pacific. Tuesday’s operation brings cumulative totals to at least 227 confirmed deaths across 68 reported strikes over roughly one year, including consecutive actions following an extended operational pause.
General Francis L. Donovan, SOUTHCOM commander, stated the military remains committed to dismantling cartel networks through precise operations designed to disrupt trafficking operations and protect U.S. borders. Video footage released by SOUTHCOM depicted the targeted vessel followed by an explosion.
The Trump administration is simultaneously negotiating military cooperation agreements with allied nations throughout Latin America. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced during a Panama visit this month that Colombia, Guatemala, and Honduras agreed to joint U.S. military operations on their territory, though Guatemala subsequently denied reaching such an accord.
President Trump has characterized the situation as an armed conflict with cartels, framing the military strikes as essential to reducing drug flows and overdose deaths within the United States.
