Mike Mazzei, a former Oklahoma state senator and financial planner with the endorsement of President Donald Trump, prevailed in a primary runoff election Tuesday night to clinch the Republican nomination for governor. Mazzei’s victory over current Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond positions him as the frontrunner in the heavily Republican state and represents a win for outgoing Governor Kevin Stitt, who had long clashed with Drummond.
The animosity between Stitt and Drummond has centered on environmental litigation, particularly Drummond’s legal actions against Oklahoma poultry companies over phosphorus contamination of water supplies. Stitt opposed these efforts, contending that Drummond overstepped his authority as attorney general and risked damaging the state’s agricultural economy and job market.
Mazzei’s campaign emphasized tax reform proposals, including elimination of Oklahoma’s income tax within six years and removal of property taxes for seniors and veterans. He also pledged to restrict foreign land purchases, strengthen education, and enhance government accountability while portraying Drummond as a tax-and-spend liberal.
Drummond, a rancher and former fighter pilot, countered by highlighting his record as attorney general, particularly his prosecution of Chinese illegal marijuana operations and enforcement of immigration law. Neither candidate secured 50 percent support in the initial June 2 primary, forcing the runoff between the top two finishers.
Trump previously called Mazzei a “MAGA warrior” in a May Truth Social post, praising his business background and prior roles as state Senate Finance Committee chairman and secretary of budget. The Club for Growth, a pro-business advocacy group, contributed $9 million supporting Mazzei’s candidacy.
Mazzei now faces Democratic nominee Cyndi Munson, the Oklahoma House minority leader, in the general election scheduled for November 3.
