Serena and Venus Williams will compete as a doubles team at the U.S. Open after securing a wild card entry into the event on Wednesday. The sisters are preparing to take the court at a tournament where they have previously claimed two championships and maintained an impressive 27-7 record across nine appearances.
Serena Williams, 44, made her comeback to professional tennis this summer following a four-year hiatus from competition. The pair had planned to reunite at Wimbledon but those plans fell apart when Serena sustained a knee injury during her singles match. They subsequently competed together at the Cincinnati Open, where they exited in the opening round.
The Williams siblings captured U.S. Open doubles titles in 1999 and 2009. Their last partnership at the tournament came in 2022, when they lost what many observers believed would be Serena’s final match at Flushing Meadows. Venus, 46, is also competing in the women’s singles draw at this year’s championship.
Over their storied career, the sisters accumulated 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and won Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. They also shared the world No. 1 ranking in women’s doubles for eight consecutive weeks. Serena played mixed doubles with Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday, winning one match before falling in the quarterfinals.
