The Atlanta Falcons face an unexpected quarterback decision heading into their Week 1 matchup against Pittsburgh after Tua Tagovailoa’s disappointing performance in training camp and early preseason games. When Tagovailoa joined the organization after his release by the Miami Dolphins, team leadership envisioned him as the immediate starter while Michael Penix Jr. recovered from an ACL injury on the sidelines.

Tagovailoa’s play has fallen short of expectations, completing 3 of 5 passes for 22 yards in the preseason opener against Denver before head coach Kevin Stefanski benched him in favor of backup options Jack Strand and Cooper Rush. According to ESPN and NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport, the quarterback position has now become Penix’s to lose based on the veteran’s lackluster showing both in competitive games and practice sessions.

Rapoport indicated that the organization’s original strategy—keeping Penix inactive for several games while he fully recovered—appears unlikely given Tagovailoa’s inability to separate himself from other candidates. Stefanski emphasized the competitive nature of the quarterback room, stressing that all players are pushing each other through consistent work and effort.

The Falcons must finalize their starting assignment before the September 13 kickoff in Pittsburgh. Tagovailoa will have one final opportunity to improve his standing in a preseason contest against his former team, the Miami Dolphins, on Friday, though the organizational momentum has clearly shifted toward the recovering Penix.
