A 66-year-old construction worker in Davie died Monday after being submerged in a retention pond during an equipment malfunction at a job site. Tyrone Smith was transported to Broward Health Medical Center following the incident but could not be revived, according to authorities who confirmed his death.
Emergency responders discovered the man in cardiac arrest when they pulled him from the water at the construction site located in the 2200 block of Shotgun Road, near the I-75 interchange with Royal Palm Boulevard. Police arrived after receiving reports of a possible drowning and found the excavator submerged in the pond, with rescuers successfully extracting Smith from the water.
Davie authorities determined the incident was accidental after reviewing circumstances at the scene. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has launched an investigation into the mishap, working alongside Davie police to establish the exact cause of the equipment failure.
