Cal Raleigh broke through a prolonged batting drought with a remarkable three-homer performance Monday night as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 9-2. The switch-hitting catcher’s breakthrough game marked the first time in his professional career he had reached the three-homer milestone in a single contest.

Raleigh’s first shot came in the opening inning off Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler, a two-run blast that capped a five-run outburst. He followed with a leadoff homer against Wheeler in the fifth inning before adding a solo drive off reliever Chase Shugart in the seventh.

The catcher’s hot night propelled him to 17 home runs on the season while also notching three hits and a walk. Raleigh’s performance proved transformative for his season statistics, lifting his batting average from .159 to .167.

Last season, Raleigh finished as runner-up for the American League MVP award, having led all of Major League Baseball with 60 home runs and 125 RBIs.
