An independent arbitrator has mandated that The Washington Post reinstate columnist Karen Attiah, determining the news organization violated her labor contract when it terminated her employment last year. Arbitrator Sarah Miller Espinosa concluded that the paper “did not have good and sufficient cause” for the dismissal and found no evidence of gross misconduct by Attiah, according to reporting by The New York Times.

Attiah was fired following remarks she posted on the social media platform Bluesky after conservative commentator Charlie Kirk’s death. The columnist wrote that she would not participate in “performative mourning” for Kirk and criticized what she characterized as American cultural expectations surrounding displays of grief for public figures who promoted violence. She later acknowledged that a separate post containing a quotation attributed to Kirk was inaccurate.

In response to the arbitrator’s decision, Attiah announced her legal victory on social media, stating she had been wrongfully terminated for exercising her professional duties as an opinion writer. She expressed relief that the record had been corrected through the arbitration process. The Washington Post declined to elaborate beyond confirming it respects the arbitration process.

Attiah’s reinstatement order comes after she initiated legal proceedings in autumn and the parties agreed to binding arbitration in June, marking the conclusion of the dispute over the circumstances surrounding her termination.
