House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., recently met with Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, to explore potential points of agreement between the two sides, according to multiple reports. The discussion centered on housing, immigration, and escalating living costs as subjects where common ground might exist, the New York Times reported. Kushner also recommended that Jeffries connect with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles during their conversation, sources familiar with the encounter told the outlet.

The reported meeting has provoked strong criticism from progressive Democrats and liberal commentators who view the outreach as a misstep. Zeteo founder and CEO Mehdi Hasan criticized the encounter on social media, stating that Jeffries should instead be subpoenaing Kushner for corruption investigations if Democrats regain House control. Other progressive voices expressed similar frustration, with some questioning why Democratic leadership would engage in dialogue rather than aggressive oversight of Trump administration officials.

Jeffries defended the engagement strategy in a statement, emphasizing that Democrats remain committed to opposing what he characterized as an “extremist approach” to governing. He reiterated that House Democrats will continue demanding transformational policy changes on affordability and other issues whenever meeting with Trump administration officials, stating the party is “fighting for an affordable America.”

Democrats currently hold fewer seats than Republicans in the House, but strategists view the upcoming midterm elections as an opportunity to reclaim the majority. Should Democrats succeed, Jeffries would be positioned as a leading contender for the speaker position.
