A delegation of European officials, including U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, converged on Kyiv on Monday to participate in ceremonies commemorating Ukraine’s Independence Day. The visit occurred as Russia continues military operations against its neighbor, now in its fifth year following the initial February 2022 invasion. Burnham’s trip marked his debut international engagement since assuming office last month.
Nearly a dozen European leaders attended the event alongside dignitaries such as European Council President Antonio Costa. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha underscored the symbolic importance of the occasion, stating that independence has proven far more than theoretical for Ukraine, which has fought to preserve its sovereignty. The presence of allied nations demonstrated continued international backing for Kyiv’s resistance efforts.
Burnham was scheduled to co-chair a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, with French and German leaders participating remotely. The U.K. announced authorization for defense contractor MBDA to share classified technical details regarding British components in the SCALP long-range missile system. This approval would enable France and Ukraine to pursue domestic manufacturing of the weapon on Ukrainian soil.
The SCALP missile represents the French iteration of the British Storm Shadow system, incorporating shared Anglo-French technological capabilities. Visiting delegations pledged additional military and financial assistance to Ukraine. Relations with Washington have cooled under President Donald Trump, while Ukraine faces support for Russia from North Korea and China.
Both combatants have intensified long-range strike campaigns targeting infrastructure, supply chains, and civilian morale. Ukrainian drone operations have damaged Russian petroleum facilities and targeted major e-commerce platforms. Russian air defenses reported intercepting 351 Ukrainian drones overnight across eight regions, Crimea, and surrounding waters, according to the Defense Ministry.
Three teenagers died and six children sustained injuries in southern Russian city Krasnodar following Ukrainian attacks on e-commerce warehouses, according to children’s rights ombudswoman Maria Lvova-Belova. Major retailer Ozon confirmed a significant fire at a logistics facility following overnight strikes. Four Ozon locations appeared to have been targeted across multiple days of coordinated assaults.
