The Republican primary race to fill South Carolina’s vacant U.S. Senate seat culminates Tuesday with a runoff between interim Senator Darline Graham and Representative Ralph Norman. The special election will determine who advances to face Democrat Annie Andrews in November’s general election.
Graham, the late Senator Lindsey Graham’s sister, was appointed to the interim position last month and immediately began campaigning for a full term. President Donald Trump has been a vocal supporter, holding a rally for her in Myrtle Beach on Friday and planning additional teleconference events to boost her candidacy. Trump encouraged South Carolina voters to support Graham, citing her as his chosen candidate in the race.
Graham has faced criticism for missing campaign days due to Senate votes in Washington, leaving some voters unfamiliar with her background and policy positions. She ramped up grassroots efforts in recent days, holding meet-and-greet events in Aiken and Seneca on Monday and securing the endorsement of Governor Henry McMaster, who appointed her to the interim post.
Norman, a wealthy developer and congressman, has positioned himself as the more experienced choice, having recently lost a gubernatorial bid. He has attacked Graham as a political novice bankrolled by special interests and has emphasized his congressional voting record and business background at multiple campaign stops across the state.
The winner of Tuesday’s runoff will face Andrews in the general election. No Democrat has been elected to statewide office in South Carolina in two decades.
