Prince Andrew reportedly feels increasingly disconnected from his family as his isolation from royal life intensifies, according to sources close to the former Duke of York. British broadcaster Helena Chard told Fox News Digital that Andrew’s associates are regularly in contact with him and that he remains socially active, choosing to spend time abroad with friends rather than attending family gatherings at Balmoral Castle.
An unnamed associate revealed to The Sun that Andrew declined King Charles III’s invitation to the annual Balmoral retreat, fearing he would face rejection and cold treatment from extended family members. The source indicated that Andrew saw little value in attending an event where he expected to feel unwelcome and isolated, questioning why he would travel such a distance to endure such discomfort.
Royal expert Hilary Fordwich suggested that Andrew’s estrangement reflects the family’s assessment that he no longer holds significance within the institution. She emphasized that the primary concern among senior royals centers on preventing further reputational damage to the monarchy rather than addressing Andrew’s emotional well-being.
Andrew’s royal troubles began in 2019 when he withdrew from public duties following a poorly received BBC interview addressing his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II revoked his military titles and honors as he faced a sexual assault lawsuit from Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre, which was settled out of court that same year.
In October 2025, King Charles III stripped Andrew of his remaining royal titles amid renewed scrutiny over his Epstein connections, intensified by the release of Giuffre’s posthumous memoir and previously undisclosed documents. The palace subsequently formally notified Andrew to vacate Royal Lodge, his longtime residence.
Andrew faced arrest in February 2025 on suspicion of misconduct in public office, accused of sharing confidential information with Epstein during his tenure as a U.K. trade envoy. He was released after 11 hours in custody, with the investigation remaining active.
Royal broadcaster Ian Pelham Turner characterized Andrew’s circumstances as a “lonely existence,” noting that his preferred recreational activities have been curtailed and that his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson maintains distance from him. Turner suggested that Andrew’s rejection of the king’s invitation stems from a combination of resentment, diminished regard for Charles, and tension with Prince William.
Despite his isolation from active royal life, Andrew retains one significant privilege: inclusion on a confidential government list of royal family members with pre-arranged funeral plans. According to the Daily Mail, his service is scheduled to take place at St. George’s Chapel with burial at the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore in Windsor.
Spencer Kuvin, an attorney representing nine Epstein victims, contested this arrangement, arguing that taxpayer funds should not support Andrew’s funeral or benefit him in any capacity. He characterized the expenditure as an embarrassment to the Crown and a misuse of public resources.
