President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump completed an honorary circuit around the IndyCar track in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, riding in the presidential motorcade before the Freedom 250 Grand Prix began. Spectators along the 1.7-mile course, which winds near the U.S. Capitol and the National Mall, greeted the presidential motorcade with applause. Trump was slated to deliver the green flag to officially start the race.

Before returning to the Beast, Trump exchanged words with several competing drivers on the track. When asked by FOX Sports’ Jamie Little about his expectations for his first IndyCar event, Trump emphasized safety and enjoyment as his chief concerns. He recalled telling the drivers to “have fun” and prioritized their wellbeing throughout the competition.

The 147-lap race represented part of broader festivities celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, with both IndyCar and the International Race of Champions series competing in the nation’s capital. The event commenced at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, marking a significant racing spectacle in the historic venue.

Pole position winner Álex Palou, who leads the IndyCar series standings with six victories this season, holds a 133-point advantage over Kyle Kirkwood and a 137-point lead ahead of David Malukas. Palou previously visited the White House for the track course unveiling and recalled meeting Trump as an unforgettable experience. He noted receiving a spray of the president’s cologne during the visit, describing the entire encounter as a memory he hopes to share with future generations.
