Kyle Schwarber delivered a dramatic 459-foot home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The towering blast over the Citizens Bank Park batter’s eye marked Schwarber’s major league-leading 39th home run of the season and secured a walk-off win that extended Philadelphia’s winning streak to nine consecutive games.
The Phillies mounted an improbable comeback from a four-run deficit in the ninth, with Schwarber battling to a 2-2 count before connecting off Cardinals closer Riley O’Brien. The slugger acknowledged the magnitude of the moment, saying he experienced “a little bit of disbelief” watching the ball leave the park, though he remained confident throughout the rally. This marked the first walk-off home run by a Phillies player since Schwarber accomplished the same feat on July 9, 2023, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The ninth-inning uprising began when Bryce Harper led off with a double but seemed destined for failure after two quick outs. J.T. Realmuto’s single, a walk by Justin Crawford, and a three-run double by utility player Edmundo Sosa set the stage for a game-tying single by Bryan De La Cruz before Schwarber’s heroics. Sosa credited the team’s relentless mentality, stating, “We’re the Phillies. When we’re late in the game we never stop fighting.”
The dramatic victory pushed Philadelphia to within 2½ games of the Atlanta Braves in the NL East standings, a substantial improvement after the team had trailed in the wild-card race just weeks earlier. Schwarber emphasized the team’s well-rounded play, noting that five teammates had worked two-strike counts during their ninth-inning at-bats. Harper extended his on-base streak to 25 consecutive games with his double to start the winning rally.
