Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker delivered one of the most impressive kicks of the preseason Saturday night, launching a 69-yard field goal that appeared to have the distance for a potential NFL record. The spectacular attempt sailed through the uprights before halftime, extending the Chiefs’ lead to 9-0 and drawing celebration from Patrick Mahomes and his teammates on the sideline.
Had the kick counted in the regular season, it would have surpassed the current NFL record of 68 yards, set by Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little against the Las Vegas Raiders in November. Butker already holds the Super Bowl record for the longest field goal, a 57-yarder he made against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, breaking the previous mark set by 49ers kicker Jake Moody earlier in that same game.
Despite the highlight-reel moment, Butker’s overall performance left him visibly disappointed after Kansas City fell to Tampa Bay 16-15. He missed an extra point attempt after an Emmett Johnson touchdown, with the re-try bouncing off the upright following a Chiefs penalty on the initial try. He also missed a potential game-winning 43-yard field goal attempt that would have secured victory.
“You’ve got to make your kicks. Miss an extra point, miss a game-winner. That’s what I care about, not the 69-yarder or whatever it was,” Butker said in the postgame locker room. He acknowledged struggling mentally on the missed 43-yarder despite feeling good about the kick’s trajectory, joking that he may have needed more energy for the second half.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid praised Butker’s overall effort while acknowledging the frustration from the missed critical moments. “Butker, until the last field goal, had a heck of a day. But he’ll be the first to tell you that’s the one he’ll remember,” Reid said. “He’ll learn from it and move on. He’s made enough of those big ones for us that we know what he can do.”
Kansas City will complete its preseason schedule Friday night against the Seattle Seahawks as the team prepares for the regular season.
