Wildlife authorities in New York removed a Burmese python from an individual who was exhibiting the snake to onlookers on July 12 near the Riegelmann Boardwalk in Coney Island. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation responded to the incident and took the reptile into custody.
The seizure underscores ongoing concerns about exotic animal possession in populated areas. Burmese pythons are regulated in New York due to their potential invasiveness and the risks they pose to public safety when kept by unpermitted individuals.
Officials did not immediately release additional details regarding potential charges or the animal’s current status. The case remains under the jurisdiction of the state environmental agency.
