Two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani completed another phase of his rehabilitation Saturday, facing live hitters in a controlled setting at Dodgers facilities. The Japanese slugger threw 30 pitches while donning long sleeves in 93-degree heat, finishing the workout with an encouraging thumbs-up gesture to the team staff assembled to monitor his progress.
Ohtani has not appeared in a game since July 3, sidelined by persistent soreness in his left knee—the leg he relies on when delivering pitches from the mound. Manager Dave Roberts indicated optimism about the injury’s trajectory while tempering expectations about an immediate return. “We’re getting there,” Roberts said, noting that if circumstances were different, Ohtani would push to pitch within days.
The Dodgers plan to schedule at least one additional live batting practice session for Ohtani during the coming week. Upon rejoining the rotation, he will initially be restricted to one, two, or three innings as part of a graduated return designed to build strength and confidence. Roberts outlined the ultimate objective: having Ohtani capable of throwing complete starts by October’s postseason competition.
Right-hander Tyler Glasnow will rejoin the rotation Tuesday against Atlanta following an extended absence. Glasnow last pitched May 6 before lower back spasms forced him onto the 60-day injured list. He will complement a rotation featuring Tarik Skubal, Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Roki Sasaki.
Closer Edwin Díaz continues his recovery from neck inflammation on the 15-day injured list. Roberts indicated the team will exercise caution in Díaz’s transition back to high-leverage situations, prioritizing his overall health over a rushed return to closing duties.
All-Star outfielder Andy Pages joined the injured list Saturday after being struck by a pitch from Pirates starter Bubba Chandler during Friday’s game. Roberts suggested surgical intervention may be necessary, with a four-week minimum absence anticipated. The Dodgers recalled outfielder Alek Thomas from Triple-A Oklahoma City to bolster their defensive depth.
