With college football set to kick off in roughly a week, ESPN has officially confirmed that its flagship College GameDay program will descend on Oxford, Mississippi for the third week of the season. The network’s decision to broadcast from the Magnolia Bowl between LSU and Ole Miss comes as little surprise given the high-profile nature of the contest and the compelling storylines surrounding it.
The rivalry between these two Southeastern Conference foes stretches back to 1894, when the programs first met on the gridiron. The annual matchup carries its own identity as “The Magnolia Bowl,” a tradition that has endured for more than a century. This year’s edition takes on additional significance with former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin returning to Vaught Hemingway Stadium as the leader of the rival Tigers.
Kiffin’s departure from Oxford for Baton Rouge in late November sparked considerable controversy, with tensions escalating through incidents at Oxford Airport and subsequent public comments in Vanity Fair. His contentious exit has made him a focal point of animosity among Ole Miss fans heading into the September 19 matchup. Current Rebels coach Pete Golding has stated publicly that no lingering resentment exists between himself and his predecessor, though such assurances are unlikely to resonate with the fan base.
Both programs enter the season ranked in the preseason AP Poll, with LSU at 11th and Ole Miss at ninth. Ticket availability for the game starts at $600 on the secondary market, reflecting the high demand. Despite LSU’s reported $40 million roster expenditure, Ole Miss is favored by 2.5 points ahead of the September 19 clash.
