Alexis Antonio Cedillos-Campos, a 19-year-old Salvadoran national, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the Monday stabbing death of 42-year-old Carmen Lizet Puch of Reston, Virginia. Cedillos-Campos was detained in Prince George’s County pending extradition to Fairfax County, where he faces a second-degree murder charge, according to police records.
Federal authorities confirmed that Cedillos-Campos entered the United States illegally at El Paso, Texas in April 2024 during the Biden administration. A jogger discovered Puch unconscious near a popular Northern Virginia trail early Monday morning. She had sustained upper body trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, Fairfax County Police Capt. Jason Chandler stated at a news conference.
Puch, a restaurant worker and mother of a young daughter, was found beside her vehicle, with sources indicating she had been stabbed inside the car. The White House acknowledged the case, stating the killing was preventable, while the Department of Homeland Security released a statement criticizing the Biden administration’s immigration enforcement practices.
The case marks another serious crime involving an undocumented immigrant in Fairfax County this year. An 18-year-old Salvadoran national, Israel Flores Ortiz, was convicted earlier in 2024 of assault and battery for groping multiple underage girls at Fairfax High School after entering the country illegally.
Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger has faced criticism regarding her administration’s handling of crime involving undocumented immigrants. On her first day in office, Spanberger rescinded an executive order by her predecessor directing state law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration authorities and ordered the termination of all 287(g) agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
