The future of LIV Golf has become golf’s dominant storyline as the Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund signaled it would halt financial backing after the 2026 season. Uncertainty surrounding alternative funding sources has intensified speculation about potential player migrations back to the PGA Tour, overshadowing the ongoing FedEx Cup Playoffs and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler’s continued dominance.

At the BMW Championship in St. Louis on Wednesday, Rory McIlroy offered a pointed perspective on the prospect of LIV defectors rejoining the PGA Tour. When asked whether returning LIV players would bring value to the circuit, McIlroy responded by questioning whether the breakaway league itself had created any value, asserting that the PGA Tour currently occupies a position of strength.

McIlroy suggested that any LIV players seeking reinstatement should expect significantly harsher terms than the arrangement Brooks Koepka received when he initially returned. He noted that the returning member program offered in February will not be available to future applicants and that subsequent deals will be considerably less favorable, potentially making a comeback difficult for stars like Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler offered a contrasting view, characterizing LIV’s elite contingent as “really good” players who would provide substantial value upon their return. Scheffler acknowledged the PGA Tour’s unmatched depth while recognizing that several LIV competitors represent formidable talent worthy of competing against at the sport’s highest levels.

Rahm and DeChambeau would undoubtedly strengthen the PGA Tour’s field, bringing established fanbases, consistent major championship contention, and in DeChambeau’s case, an existing rivalry with McIlroy. Despite McIlroy’s skepticism, observers widely expect these prominent LIV players to eventually rejoin the PGA Tour, pending resolution of ongoing negotiations.
