Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared Tuesday that millions of Americans are receptive to the leftward ideology championed by Democratic Party socialists, inserting himself into an ongoing debate about the direction of the party. Speaking on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle,” de Blasio highlighted politicians aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America as exemplars of a movement gaining traction among voters frustrated with the political establishment.

De Blasio specifically cited Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, and New York City Council Member Zohran Mamdani as leaders successfully channeling discontent over economic hardship and cost-of-living pressures. He attributed their recent electoral success to messaging centered on affordability concerns, describing them as pioneers of a political direction with proven appeal at the ballot box.

While maintaining he is neither a socialist nor a DSA member, de Blasio expressed backing for signature progressive positions including universal healthcare, higher taxes on wealthy Americans, and withdrawal from military involvement in Iran. He framed these policies as direct responses to voters’ bread-and-butter concerns about wages, healthcare expenses, and energy costs.

De Blasio additionally called for dismantling U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and establishing a replacement agency that could secure borders without generating urban violence. He also advocated creating a legalization pathway for undocumented immigrants without convictions for violent or serious crimes, acknowledging certain boundaries to his alignment with the broader movement.
