A Miami-Dade County judge handed down a five-year prison sentence Tuesday to political consultant Esther Nuhfer in connection with a Venezuela lobbying case linked to former Miami Congressman David Rivera. Nuhfer departed the courthouse with her family present, offering no public statement as she wore dark sunglasses.
The prosecution centered on allegations that Nuhfer and Rivera engaged in clandestine lobbying on behalf of Venezuela’s government during the initial Trump administration. A multimillion-dollar transaction involving Venezuela’s state oil company in 2017 formed the basis of the charges that led to Rivera’s indictment and arrest in 2022.
Testimony from Nuhfer’s supporters filled the courtroom, with friends describing her as a person of integrity and patriotism. The judge determined that while the case revolved around Rivera’s central role—referring to it as “the David Rivera show”—Nuhfer did not occupy a leadership position in the scheme.
Despite the court’s assessment that Nuhfer played a secondary role, the five-year sentence proceeded as handed down by the presiding judge.
