President Donald Trump issued orders Sunday directing the Pentagon to substantially reduce planned joint military exercises with South Korea, arguing the allied nation has declined to participate in U.S. operations against Iran. Trump cited his administration’s positive relationship with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un as justification for limiting the drills, which commenced Monday.

In a social media statement, Trump claimed the exercises were both expensive and conveyed messaging inappropriate toward North Korea, which he characterized as having remained “unthreatening and respectful” throughout his tenure. Trump instructed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to cut back the joint operations significantly, acknowledging the exercises had already begun but stating it was not too late to modify them substantially.

The president revealed he had recently asked South Korea’s leader to participate in an Iranian denuclearization initiative, which Seoul declined. Trump’s directive represents another instance of his administration appearing to prioritize relationships with traditionally adversarial nations over commitments to established U.S. allies in the region.

The Pentagon’s redeployment of the USS George Washington carrier from the Pacific to the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln adds pressure to military resources. The Lincoln’s deployment has been extended beyond its original May return date due to operational demands in the Iran theater, while sailors aboard have experienced mounting mental health and supply concerns.

The temporary absence of a carrier presence in the western Pacific coincides with analysts’ warnings that prolonged Middle East operations are straining American naval personnel. Strategic experts note the administration’s pivot contradicts its stated emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region as a priority.

Meanwhile, the BBC petitioned a federal court in Florida Friday to compel testimony and documents from Trump family members connected to the broadcaster’s $10 billion defamation lawsuit filed by Trump in December. The filing argues Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner and Donald Trump Jr. possess relevant knowledge and records regarding Trump’s claims that a 2024 BBC documentary misrepresented his January 6 speech through selective editing.

The BBC acknowledged editing errors in the documentary but disputes Trump’s defamation claims. Lawyers cited difficulty serving subpoenas due to Secret Service protection surrounding the family members.
