Nielsen, the television ratings firm, has released a comprehensive analysis attempting to definitively answer which NFL cities boast the most passionate fan communities. The company unveiled its inaugural “Local NFL fandom index” on Monday, evaluating all 30 NFL markets across eight distinct performance indicators to measure fan investment and allegiance to their teams.
The index measured apparel purchases, general interest levels, live event attendance, betting intent, social media engagement, radio listenership, streaming habits, and linear television viewership. The ranking methodology weights these factors to produce an overall fandom score for each market, though Nielsen did not fully explain how general interest levels are determined or the weighting system applied to the metrics.
Mid-sized and smaller markets significantly outpaced their larger counterparts in overall fan engagement. Nielsen attributed this trend to reduced competition from other entertainment venues, particularly in upper Midwest cities during fall and winter months, which concentrates consumer focus on local football teams. Cincinnati, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland scored highly due to robust radio listenership, television viewership, and stadium attendance relative to market size.
Detroit and Green Bay ranked among the top five in merchandise sales, bolstered by the Lions’ recent competitive success and the Packers’ consistent winning history. Local television viewership proved notably stronger in smaller markets including Green Bay, Buffalo, Kansas City, and Pittsburgh compared to major metropolitan areas.
Major markets and cities with significant transplant populations underperformed in the index. Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tampa, and New York all ranked lower, as residents face competing entertainment options and diverse fan bases from other regions dilute local NFL team loyalty. These markets additionally host multiple professional sports franchises competing for consumer attention and spending.
Philadelphia Eagles fans distinguished themselves among large-market communities, ranking in the top five overall despite fierce competition for entertainment dollars. While the Eagles did not lead in any single metric, they placed in the top five across five of the eight measured categories.
Success on the field correlates directly with fan engagement levels. Kansas City outperforms comparable markets largely because the Chiefs remain Super Bowl contenders annually with Patrick Mahomes, while Buffalo’s consistent playoff runs under Josh Allen have strengthened fan devotion. Similarly, Boston’s historically strong fan support has been reinforced by the Patriots’ sustained success.
The Bills Mafia, representing Western New York’s dedicated fan community, now claim the distinction of being the NFL’s most passionate fan base according to Nielsen’s data, offering quantifiable evidence to support the fanbase’s long-standing reputation for unwavering loyalty.
