Rep. Warren Davidson of Ohio launched a direct attack on Republican Senate candidate Darline Graham on Monday, using social media to characterize her as an establishment ally in the lead-up to a high-stakes runoff election in South Carolina. Davidson’s remarks came just days before voters return to the polls on August 25 to determine the winner of a contentious special primary race.
Graham finished the August 11 GOP primary in first place and will face second-place finisher Rep. Ralph Norman in the August 25 runoff. “Ralph Norman will work to drain the swamp. The swamp wants allies not adversaries. The swamp appointed an ally. These are the stakes in South Carolina,” Davidson wrote in his Monday post on X.
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Graham to the Senate seat previously held by her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, marking a controversial move that critics have seized upon as evidence of establishment favoritism. The appointment drew immediate scrutiny from those challenging Graham in the special primary race.
President Donald Trump has maintained his backing of Graham heading into the runoff, issuing a forceful endorsement on August 14 via Truth Social. “SOUTH CAROLINA: GET OUT AND VOTE FOR DARLINE GRAHAM ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 25TH. DARLINE HAS MY COMPLETE AND TOTAL ENDORSEMENT — SHE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!” Trump declared, bolstering Graham’s campaign ahead of the decisive vote.
Rep. Russell Fry, who placed third in the primary, also endorsed Graham for the runoff, urging his supporters to back her candidacy in the upcoming contest. Graham’s campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Davidson’s criticism.
