Moderators of the r/WNBA subreddit have implemented a filter preventing users from posting about player Sophie Cunningham, citing concerns that discussion of the athlete generates trolling and off-topic comments. The restriction emerged after a user attempted to post about Cunningham and discovered the name had been blocked from the forum.
When the user questioned the decision, subreddit moderators acknowledged the filter was intentional. In their response, moderators stated they had “chosen to filter content” related to Cunningham because such posts “tend to bring out trolls and people who aren’t fans of the W.” The moderators suggested the user post about Cunningham on alternative WNBA subreddits instead.
Cunningham has faced significant backlash in recent weeks following her public statements in support of excluding biological male athletes from women’s sports competitions. The position aligns with polling showing 80 to 90 percent support among the American public, though it remains a point of contention within professional basketball circles.
The controversy surrounding Cunningham has extended beyond online forums. She has been booed during games, encountered protests from opposing fans, and received criticism from fellow players and coaches. Her coach notably defended another player after an on-court incident involving Cunningham that resulted in an injury.
The subreddit moderation decision reflects broader tensions within the WNBA community, which has experienced growing fan interest largely attributed to recent player acquisitions and elevated media attention to the league.
