Ukraine Conducts Major Drone Assault Across Russia, Causing Multiple Casualties

In a sweeping aerial operation Sunday, Ukrainian forces deployed hundreds of unmanned drones across Russian territory in what ranks among Kyiv’s most extensive attacks since the conflict began. The coordinated assault resulted in at least six confirmed deaths and struck multiple targets spanning several regions, according to Russian and Ukrainian officials.

Moscow’s Defense Ministry claimed its air defense systems destroyed 822 Ukrainian drones during the overnight strike. About 600 drones were identified approaching the Russian capital, with roughly one-third of those intercepted over the Moscow region itself, according to Mayor Sergei Sobyanin’s assessment.

In the Moscow region, an 83-year-old resident died when a Ukrainian drone struck his private residence, regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov confirmed. The same barrage ignited a fire at a warehouse operated by major Russian retailer Wildberries in Podolsk, with photographs distributed by Russian media outlets documenting thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the facility.

The southwestern Rostov region sustained a separate attack involving more than 150 drones that killed five people, Regional Governor Yury Slyusar reported. That assault damaged numerous residential buildings and a railway station while also triggering a forest fire across the area.

Ukraine has intensified its bombing campaigns throughout 2024, employing long-range missiles and drone swarms to target Russian military manufacturing and power infrastructure. The nation has particularly focused on Wildberries distribution centers, destroying merchandise valued in the billions of dollars and bringing warfare’s consequences to ordinary Russian civilians roughly four-and-a-half years into Moscow’s full-scale invasion.

Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory claimed additional lives Sunday. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that a Russian missile attack on the city of Kryvyi Rih killed two civilians and injured 14 others, while a separate strike in Sumy claimed one additional life.

A Russian assault targeting Kyiv sparked multiple fires throughout the city and left six people injured. Zelenskyy characterized the pattern of attacks as deliberately targeting civilian areas, noting that air raid sirens continued sounding across numerous regions as Russia launched successive waves of drone strikes.
