Novak Djokovic’s bid for another Cincinnati Open title ended abruptly Saturday when the 39-year-old Serbian fell to Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante in straight sets at the Mason, Ohio tournament. The match concluded 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 after two hours and 44 minutes played under oppressive heat and humidity conditions.
Tirante, a 25-year-old ranked 50th globally, delivered the upset against the five-ranked Djokovic, who was making his competitive return following a semifinal loss to top seed Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon. The victory marked Tirante’s most significant career achievement to date as he ended Djokovic’s impressive 10-match Cincinnati winning streak.
Physical struggles appeared to hamper Djokovic throughout the contest, with the three-time Cincinnati champion managing to save 13 of 15 break points. Tirante capitalized on a critical break in the ninth game of the final set to secure the victory and advance.
Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, will next compete in the U.S. Open, scheduled to commence August 30. Tirante previously claimed Cincinnati titles in 2020 and 2023 before this unexpected elimination.
