Authorities arrested a 41-year-old Miami resident Thursday on grand theft charges stemming from a luggage theft at Miami International Airport, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. The stolen bag contained approximately $9,000 worth of property and was taken from the American Airlines baggage claim area on July 31.

James Dickson Silk was spotted by deputies on Thursday loitering in the same baggage claim area where the theft occurred weeks earlier. Surveillance footage showed Silk approaching Carousel 26, seizing the luggage as it moved along the belt, and then retreating to a third-floor men’s restroom before exiting via the MIA Mover, according to the arrest report.

Deputies recovered the stolen luggage still in Silk’s possession and obtained a confession. Silk stated he had lost his lease and had been living inside the airport terminal, claiming he took the bag to better blend in as a passenger rather than a loiterer. He denied removing any items from the luggage, though he acknowledged he would have taken clothing had the need arisen.

Court records reveal Silk was previously arrested on May 31 on identical grand theft charges for allegedly stealing a backpack from a guest at the Element Brickell hotel containing roughly $4,000 in items. As of Friday afternoon, Silk remained in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond eligibility, having been out on felony bond at the time of his latest arrest.
