NFL Imposes Same Operating Restrictions on Troy Aikman’s Dolphins Role as Tom Brady Faces With Raiders

Troy Aikman will operate under the same constraints as Tom Brady when fulfilling his newly acquired consultant duties with the Miami Dolphins while maintaining his role as lead color commentator for ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcasts. The NFL announced Friday that both broadcasting personalities must adhere to identical operational parameters that have governed Brady’s involvement with the Las Vegas Raiders since his arrival at Fox Sports.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy outlined the restrictions in a statement, noting that Aikman and Brady may attend production meetings only through virtual means and cannot access team practice facilities or observe live practices. The pair are permitted to conduct one-on-one interviews with coaching staff and players at team hotels in designated areas kept separate from other personnel, and may broadcast games involving their respective clubs without limitation.

Aikman joined Miami’s ownership structure this offseason after being enlisted to advise on the search for a new general manager and head coach, positions ultimately filled by Jon-Eric Sullivan and Jeff Hafley. The league has expressed satisfaction with how Brady has balanced his dual roles over the past two seasons and anticipates no conflicts of interest from either broadcaster.

However, Aikman’s early commentary about the Dolphins’ rebuilding trajectory appears to contradict the organization’s messaging strategy, with the consultant publicly stating the team will not be competitive in 2026—a statement that undercuts leadership’s efforts to maintain player and fan confidence in the current rebuild.
