Archived videos from Abdul El-Sayed’s YouTube channel have surfaced showing the Michigan Democratic Senate candidate arguing that the Second Amendment should be replaced with a constitutional right to healthcare. In one video posted April 6, 2023, El-Sayed proposed amending the Constitution to eliminate the right to bear arms in favor of universal healthcare access, claiming the change would result in fewer gun deaths and more people with medical coverage.
El-Sayed’s campaign responded through spokeswoman Roxie Richner, stating that the candidate respects the Second Amendment while also believing healthcare constitutes a fundamental right. The campaign did not clarify whether El-Sayed’s views on gun rights have evolved since the videos were posted.
In a May 26, 2022 video transcript archived online and reviewed by Fox News Digital, El-Sayed argued that the Second Amendment applies only to regulated militias rather than individual citizens. He contended that firearms should be restricted to designated community organizations such as law enforcement, a position rejected by the Supreme Court’s 2008 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, which affirmed individual gun ownership rights.
YouTube allows users to hide previously public videos without deletion, making them inaccessible to viewers while preserving transcripts through internet archives. El-Sayed reportedly concealed approximately 100 videos before launching his Senate campaign, according to reports first revealed by CNN.
Beyond Second Amendment commentary, the hidden videos contain additional controversial statements, including criticism of President Donald Trump’s border policies, opposition to fireworks use, and comparisons between football and slavery. El-Sayed has also faced scrutiny for campaigning with streamer Hasan Piker, a self-described socialist who has made controversial statements about America and praised Communist figures.
