Kansas Man With Lengthy Criminal History Kills Family of Five Before Taking Own Life

A 53-year-old registered sex offender with an extensive criminal record allegedly gunned down Kelly L. George, 44, and their four children in their Winfield, Kansas home Tuesday morning before calling 911 to report the killings and then shooting himself, authorities said. The victims included Carol A. Williams, 9; Ronald H. Williams Jr., 7; Sarah K. Williams, 5; and Kelly M. Magee-Williams, 3.

Ronald H. Williams Sr. phoned dispatchers and confessed to killing his entire family while indicating he planned to end his own life as well. Officers working a nearby traffic accident reached the residence within minutes, hearing a single gunshot as they approached the front door, according to Winfield Police Chief Robbie DeLong.

After establishing a perimeter and treating the scene as an active barricade situation for nearly two hours, officers forced entry through the front door. They discovered all five victims dead from gunshot wounds inside the home, with investigators concluding the final shot heard by arriving officers was Williams taking his own life.

The massacre marked law enforcement’s most severe encounter with Williams, though police had documented previous contact with him. Chief DeLong disclosed that officers had interacted with Williams over “erratic behavior” in recent weeks and fielded calls regarding aggressive public conduct and reported gunfire, though investigators could not confirm the source of those shots.

Williams carried multiple aliases including Freddie Lu’Carl Williams and appeared on the Kansas Bureau of Investigation’s sex offender registry. Court records spanning nearly three decades revealed felony charges ranging from drug offenses to assault on a law enforcement officer, burglary, attempted rape, and kidnapping across Wyandotte, Johnson, and Franklin counties between 1995 and 2024.

Neighbors expressed shock and anguish over the killings. One resident recalled hearing Williams tell his wife he would call police and carry out an unspecified threat, though she did not understand his meaning at the time. Another neighbor living one block away suggested the community had failed to prevent the tragedy.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Winfield Police Department continue investigating the case. Police provided counseling support to officers and investigators affected by the scene. Chief DeLong said in his two decades leading the department, he had never encountered a mass killing of this magnitude.
