Five 17-Year-Old Friends Die in Colorado Cliff Crash as Community Mourns

A catastrophic vehicle crash claimed the lives of five 17-year-old friends from Grand Junction, Colorado, on Saturday evening when their car veered off Lookout Lane and plunged down a steep hillside. Authorities responded to the scene Sunday morning after receiving a 911 call at approximately 7:45 a.m. reporting that a vehicle had gone over a cliff edge. Emergency responders located the wreckage along the steep incline, confirming all five occupants had perished in the accident.

Investigators are examining excessive speed as a potential contributing factor to the crash, though police have not yet disclosed what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. According to the Mesa County Coroner’s Office, three of the teenagers—including the driver and front-seat passenger—were wearing seat belts at the time of impact. The two remaining passengers were not restrained and were ejected from the vehicle during the descent.

The coroner’s office declined to publicly release the victims’ names citing its policy against identifying minors, but family members have disclosed their identities to the community. One victim, Braden Taylor, 17, was confirmed dead by his grandfather Calvin Wilken, who described in a Facebook post how the vehicle had rolled down five ledges near railroad tracks overlooking the Gunnison River. The four other teenagers were identified as Tristan Tucker, Titus Gould, William Simms, and Tyler Martinez.

The tragedy has reverberated throughout Grand Junction, particularly as the school year began in the aftermath of the crash. Local businesses and community members have established fundraising efforts to assist grieving families facing unexpected funeral costs. The Grand Junction Police Department issued a statement expressing solidarity with affected families and the broader community during the period of collective mourning.
