Vermont’s Democratic Party selected economist Amanda Janoo as its gubernatorial nominee on Tuesday, marking the sixth consecutive election cycle in which the state’s dominant party seeks to unseat Republican Gov. Phil Scott. Janoo prevailed over Aly Richards, a former chief executive of a child advocacy organization who had secured endorsements from ex-Democratic Governors Howard Dean and Madeleine Kunin, according to reporting by the Associated Press.
Scott secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination without facing opposition and is pursuing his sixth consecutive two-year term as Vermont’s chief executive. Should he win reelection and serve out another term, he would surpass former Gov. Dean’s tenure as the state’s longest-serving governor. Vermont and neighboring New Hampshire remain the only two states in the nation that hold gubernatorial elections every two years.
A self-described moderate who frequently criticizes President Donald Trump, Scott backed former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley during the 2024 Republican primary and voted for Vice President Kamala Harris in November’s general election rather than supporting Trump.
Democrats face significant headwinds in their effort to defeat Scott despite controlling the state politically. Scott captured 73 percent of the vote during his 2024 reelection, building on his 69 percent showing in 2022.
