Grammy-Nominated ‘Halo’ Composer Claims Convention Rescinded Invitation Over Political Campaign Statements

Marty O’Donnell, a Grammy-nominated composer known for his work on the “Halo” video game franchise and a Trump-backed Republican nominee for Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District, claims he was removed from a scheduled appearance at a major pop culture convention. The event organizers cited concerns from LGBTQ staff members regarding O’Donnell’s recent political campaign statements, according to correspondence O’Donnell shared publicly on Tuesday.

O’Donnell stated that SacAnime convention organizers in Sacramento, California, had initially invited him to participate in a “Halo” 25th anniversary reunion scheduled for Labor Day weekend. The convention had promoted his attendance multiple times before reversing course, O’Donnell said, claiming organizers removed him from their website and deleted social media posts announcing his participation.

In a statement released Wednesday, O’Donnell attributed his disinvitation to his Republican candidacy rather than specific remarks. He referenced comments he made during an appearance on The WDW Pro Show in which he described Marxism and identity politics as an existential threat to the United States and criticized what he characterized as an ideological alliance between disparate groups including LGBTQ individuals, Islamists, and Marxists.

O’Donnell argued that his statements were being mischaracterized by political opponents and maintained that the convention’s decision to remove him actually demonstrated the silencing tactics he had criticized. He stated he would continue advocating against what he described as threats to the country, including Marxism.
