A DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office deputy apprehended a driver traveling at excessive speeds early Friday morning, interrupting what the man claimed was an urgent mission to confront an unfaithful partner. The traffic stop occurred just before 1 a.m. on August 1, when Gavin Ames was clocked at 110 mph in a 60 mph zone, according to FOX 13.
When questioned about his reckless driving, Ames made no attempt to fabricate an excuse or evade responsibility. He directly told the deputy: “I’m actually on my way to my cheating girlfriend’s house.” The candid admission did little to spare him from legal consequences.
Florida’s “super speeder” statute, which penalizes driving more than 50 mph over the posted speed limit, applied directly to Ames’s situation. The deputy explained the violation would result in immediate arrest and transport to jail, then placed Ames in handcuffs and his patrol vehicle.
The irony of his predicament became apparent to Ames during the ride. He recorded a video from the backseat remarking on his situation, noting he would now need to contact the very girlfriend he was racing to confront in order to post bail. His early morning journey had yielded an outcome far different from what he intended.
