Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White broke her silence Tuesday ahead of a matchup against the New York Liberty, launching a robust defense of her leadership and commitment to player welfare. The comments came days after Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington struck Sophie Cunningham on Saturday, an incident that drew scrutiny over White’s muted initial response.
White characterized online criticism as fabricated narratives designed to misrepresent her character and values. She emphasized that player success, health, wellness, and safety remained her top priorities and that she prided herself on maintaining strong relationships with her roster.
The coach acknowledged missing the Carrington hit in real time due to attending a postgame news conference immediately after the game concluded. Upon reviewing the play on replay, White called it “egregious” but explained her delayed assessment stemmed from not witnessing the collision firsthand.
White rejected suggestions that she fails to support her players unconditionally, stating she stands by them completely and framed broader criticism as part of divisive efforts to undermine the league.
