Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., captured the Democratic nomination for Minnesota governor on Tuesday, advancing to the general election following Gov. Tim Walz’s decision to abandon his re-election campaign. Walz withdrew from the race earlier this year as his administration faced mounting scrutiny over a massive fraud scheme involving state government programs that federal prosecutors estimate could cost taxpayers over $9 billion.
Klobuchar, Minnesota’s senior U.S. senator since 2007, defeated a field of lesser-known challengers in the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party primary. The former presidential candidate brings substantial political experience to the race, having previously served as Hennepin County attorney and mounted a 2020 bid for the Democratic nomination before endorsing Joe Biden.
Republicans have intensified attacks on the Democratic party over the fraud scandal, accusing state officials of failing to prevent systematic misuse of taxpayer funds. The controversy has dominated Minnesota politics and figures to play a central role throughout the general election campaign.
Klobuchar’s platform emphasizes government accountability, featuring a pledge to conduct a comprehensive audit of state operations beginning immediately if elected. She has characterized the fraud as unacceptable and made rooting out waste a cornerstone of her governing agenda.
The Democratic nominee will face the winner of a competitive Republican primary in November. Minnesota has not elected a Republican governor since Tim Pawlenty left office in January 2011, giving Democrats a significant structural advantage in the race.
Notably, Klobuchar is pursuing the governorship while retaining her Senate seat, which does not expire until January 2031. Should she win the gubernatorial election and resign from Congress, the resulting vacancy would create an opening in Minnesota’s congressional delegation.
