At least 181 people have been confirmed dead following a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on Monday morning, according to an announcement by Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella on Tuesday. The newly inaugurated president, who assumed office Friday in Cali, traveled to the severely affected city of Pereira to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts in the region.
Pereira, the capital of Risaralda province and a UNESCO-designated location within the “Coffee Axis,” emerged as one of the hardest-hit areas from the seismic event. Colombia’s medical examiner’s office confirmed receiving 160 bodies recovered from the impacted zones, which span across Chocó, Caldas, Risaralda, and Valle del Cauca provinces.
The disaster has prompted international humanitarian response, with organizations including the Global Empowerment Mission mobilizing to provide aid and coordinate relief supplies for affected residents. Search and recovery operations continue across multiple regions as authorities work to account for thousands of people reported missing in the aftermath of the earthquake.
