Commanders’ Tunsil Out Indefinitely With Torn Triceps, Coleman to Step in at Left Tackle

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn announced Monday that left tackle Laremy Tunsil sustained a torn triceps during Saturday’s training camp session and will undergo surgery, sidelining him for an indefinite period. Quinn acknowledged the significant loss of the veteran lineman, calling him “an absolutely fantastic teammate” whose absence would be felt across the offensive unit.

The injury occurred during an individual drill when Tunsil faced pass rusher Odafe Oweh. After going down immediately, the 32-year-old was evaluated by the training staff and subsequently transported to the facility for further assessment. The Commanders signed Tunsil to a landmark two-year, $60.2 million extension in March, making him the league’s highest-paid tackle and the first offensive lineman to earn $30 million annually.

Tunsil has been among the NFL’s elite left tackles since his selection by Miami at No. 13 overall in the draft. The five-time Pro Bowler spent three seasons with the Dolphins before moving to Houston in 2019, where he remained for six years before joining Washington last season. He appeared in 14 games for the Commanders in his debut campaign.

Brandon Coleman will assume Tunsil’s starting role, a transition Quinn characterized as natural given Coleman’s performance. The former second-round pick started 12 games at left tackle as a rookie for Washington in 2024 and made three additional starts during that span. Quinn expressed confidence in Coleman’s readiness, noting his strong offseason preparation and the team’s faith in his ability to handle the expanded responsibility.

The Commanders do not plan to pursue free agent replacements, with Quinn consulting general manager Adam Peters on the decision. Veteran Andrew Wylie will continue serving as the backup swing tackle option.
