ICE Issues Detainer for Illegal Immigrant Accused in Nashville Sidewalk Incident

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has filed a detainer against Felipe Alvarado Hernandez, 47, who faces charges stemming from an incident in which a pickup truck struck four pedestrians on a downtown Nashville sidewalk. The June 13 incident occurred when Hernandez allegedly drove the vehicle onto the walkway while attempting a left turn, according to police records.

Hernandez was arrested on July 28, more than a month after the collision. Two of the four victims sustained injuries severe enough to require wheelchairs, authorities said. At least one injured person remained hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Burn Unit as of July 29.

Multiple charges have been filed against Hernandez, including leaving the scene of an accident, failing to render aid, failure to report the incident, driving with a revoked license, and financial responsibility violations related to the injuries. License plate reader technology helped law enforcement identify the vehicle’s operator.

A Department of Homeland Security official confirmed that ICE New Orleans lodged the detainer following Hernandez’s arrest and charging. According to DHS records, Hernandez entered the country at an unspecified time and location and previously agreed to voluntary departure in January 2004 after a retail fraud arrest in Roseville, Michigan.

“When illegal aliens break our laws and endanger our communities, ICE will work with our law enforcement partners to ensure they face the consequences of their actions,” said Scott Ladwig, acting Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in New Orleans.
