Manuel Hernandez, a 46-year-old New York resident, is scheduled to make a federal court appearance Monday in Manhattan following the weekend capsizing of his 22-foot Bayliner speedboat in New York Harbor. The incident claimed the lives of Sara Sanchez, 27, and her 5-month-old daughter, Antonella Garcia, whose bodies were recovered by police divers near the Statue of Liberty. Hernandez already faces state reckless endangerment charges related to the deaths.
Federal prosecutors have not yet disclosed the specific charges against Hernandez, and it remains unclear which attorney will represent him in federal court. Nicholas Biase, spokesperson for the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s Office, confirmed that Hernandez is in federal custody and indicated that additional details would be released in due course.
The speedboat overturned late Saturday, prompting a swift rescue operation that saved 12 additional passengers. The U.S. Coast Guard reported that all rescued individuals were in stable condition. Capt. Doreen McCarthy, commander of Coast Guard Sector New York, commended the collaborative rescue efforts of multiple agencies and a civilian vessel operator for their “heroic, swift actions” in responding to the emergency.
