Ty Gibbs secured his second victory of the NASCAR Cup Series season Sunday at Iowa Speedway by executing a bold two-tire pit stop strategy down the stretch and fending off teammate Christopher Bell through the final 20 laps. The 23-year-old, grandson of former NFL coach and NASCAR team owner Joe Gibbs, crossed the finish line 0.253 seconds ahead of Bell in the 350-lap race at the Iowa facility.
The decisive moment came when both drivers pitted with 60 laps remaining. While Bell opted for four fresh tires, Gibbs chose to change only two, emerging from the pit box in the lead position. After Ross Chastain pitted on Lap 330, Gibbs inherited the top spot and successfully repelled Bell’s aggressive pursuit to the checkered flag.
Gibbs’ path to victory was not without complications early on. A faulty jack during his initial pit stop caused him to lose position and fall back to 28th place, from which he mounted a furious comeback. The result improved his season standing to second place, 103 points behind Denny Hamlin, and marked his second career victory after a triumph at Bristol on April 12.
Bell’s second-place finish represented his seventh runner-up result of the season after leading 108 laps. Pole-sitter Ryan Blaney, winner of the inaugural 2024 Cup Series race at the 0.875-mile oval, finished third despite leading a race-high 129 laps. Josh Berry rounded out the top four in his best finish of the year, while Hamlin crossed in fifth after starting from the rear due to unapproved car adjustments.
The Cup Series will move to Richmond Raceway for Saturday night’s competition.
