Sports Illustrated altered its headline coverage of a hard foul involving Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham after the original story title triggered significant social media pushback. The publication initially framed the incident—in which Chicago Sky forward DiJonai Carrington delivered a flagrant foul that left Cunningham bloodied—through the lens of “karma,” drawing criticism from readers who saw the framing as pointed commentary on Cunningham’s recent public statements regarding transgender athletes in women’s sports.
During the first quarter of Saturday’s contest, with the Fever leading 90-86, Carrington swung her forearm across Cunningham’s face at full force during a layup attempt. Officials ruled the contact a Flagrant 2 and ejected Carrington from the game. Sports Illustrated’s original headline, “Sophie Cunningham Got a Bitter Taste of Karma After Drawing Flagrant Foul in Fever-Sky,” drew accusations that the outlet was using the story to criticize Cunningham’s stance on transgender participation in women’s athletics.
The outlet subsequently revised the headline to “Sophie Cunningham’s Enforcer Role Gets Reversed Onto Her With Hard Foul in Fever-Sky,” a more neutral framing of the on-court action. Writer Kristen Wong authored the story, which originally cited a similar hard foul Cunningham had committed against Connecticut Sun forward Jacy Sheldon during the 2025 WNBA season as the basis for the “karma” narrative. Cunningham received a Flagrant 2 ejection for that earlier incident.
Cunningham acknowledged the parallel during her postgame remarks, stating she deserved ejection for her foul on Sheldon and had no objection to the call against Carrington. She also addressed Carrington’s Instagram post reading “WHITE PRIVILEGE” that appeared shortly after the ejection, dismissing any racial component to the on-court incident. Indiana head coach Stephanie White defended Carrington’s intensity while affirming the officials made the correct call on both the foul and ejection.
