Adam Vinatieri, the decorated kicker who won four Super Bowl championships during his tenure with the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts, was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday. During his acceptance remarks, the legendary placekicker seized the opportunity to needle his former head coach Bill Belichick over his highly publicized relationship with cheerleader Jordon Hudson.
Vinatieri spent six seasons under Belichick’s direction from 2000 to 2005, during which time he executed several of professional football’s most pivotal field goals while contributing to three Super Bowl victories for the Patriots. Despite the lighthearted ribbing during his speech, Vinatieri expressed genuine appreciation for Belichick’s coaching philosophy and demanded standards.
“Thank you for demanding excellence every single day. Your preparation, discipline and attention to detail shaped far more than my football career,” Vinatieri said of his former coach. He then quipped that Belichick’s absence from the ceremony was likely attributable to activities at the University of North Carolina, where Belichick assumed the head coaching position ahead of the 2025 season.
“He may be on a recruiting trip right now, looking for the next Lawrence Taylor. I thought it was because training camp had already started. But in truth, it’s because he’s judging his girlfriend’s cheerleading competition,” Vinatieri joked to the crowd.
Hudson, a 25-year-old accomplished cheerleader, has earned multiple national championships in both competitive and coaching capacities. She captured a world title in April while Belichick was in attendance to support her achievement. Their relationship garnered widespread media scrutiny following Belichick’s appointment at North Carolina.
Despite the humorous barbs, Vinatieri affirmed his respect for Belichick, calling him one of the greatest coaches in National Football League history.
